I had baby kangaroo hide behind different colored shapes so that I can use this for a colors or a shapes storytime
As for how the flannelboard works:  I hide baby kangaroo behind a shape and have the children pick a shape and say, “Baby kangaroo, where are you?  Are you behind the ______?” credit: fallingflannelboards.wordpress.com

Feel free to use the parachute if the kids need to move around – I usually do for about ten minutes or so. if no parachute use a large flat sheet or tablecloth

  • Have kids Raise it up above their heads 2-3 times
  • Down all the way to the floor 2-3 times
  • Let big people hold it and little ones go under it 2-3 times
  • Have kids lay down under the parachute facing it and go down toward them seeing if it will touch their bellies 2-3 times
  • Have kids practice shaking fast and slow
  • Have kids help put balls on the parachute and shake them up like popcorn

Toddlers: Put together the pieces the kangaroo, pouch and baby together with glue and then color them with markers or crayons.

Ten Little Candles
Use flannel pieces on a board OR place actual birthday candles in the middle of circle OR place candles in a cake you will have for snack!
Ten little candles. On a chocolate cake.
Blow out two (make a blowing out the candles sound two times)
Now there are........ (take time to count them) eight.
Eight little candles. On candlesticks.
Blow out two (make blowing out sound again--2 times)
Now there are six.
Six little candles. And not one more.
Blow out two....
Now there are four.

Four little candles. Red, white, and blue.
Blow out two
Now there are two.
Two littles candles. Standing in the sun.

Make A Wish
The children make a circle holding hands.
One child is the birthday child in the middle.  The children making the circle are the candles.
Have them walk around in a circle as they sing the song below.
When they shout the last line, the birthday child makes his wish and pretends to blow out the candles as they all fall down.
(sung to the tune of “The Mulberry Bush”)
Here we go round the birthday cake,
The birthday cake, the birthday cake.
Here we go round the birthday cake;
Today is [child’s name]’s birthday!
Shout: Make a wish!
